A feminist perspective in entrepreneurship: Breaking barriers
Lara Bertola
Chapter 2 in Feminist Perspectives in Business Studies, 2025, pp 40-56 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter examines the rise of female entrepreneurship, noting the increasing involvement of women in a historically male-dominated domain. Despite this positive trend, women continue to encounter significant challenges that limit their potential. Key issues include restricted access to capital, training, and networks, as well as societal biases and gender stereotypes, which contribute to disaprities in business size and revenue, with female-led enterprises often underperforming compared with those led by men. The chapter underscores the importance of a feminist perspective in entrepreneurship, which critically examines and seeks to dismantle the structural barriers and cultural norms that disadvantage women. By addressing the social and economic factors that perpetuate gender inequalities, a feminist approach aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for female entrepreneurs. This perspective not only highlights the unique challenges women face but also promotes strategies to empower them, such as tailored mentorship programs, inclusive networking opportunities, and policies that enhance access to essential resources. The ultimate goal is to cultivate an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is equitable and conducive to the success of all, regardless of gender, thereby contributing to broader social and economic progress.
