Stephen Ison
A chapter in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 1-9 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
From the commencement of commercial aviation at the onset of the 20th century, managing the sector has been a complex issue. This chapter provides an introduction to the Research Handbook on Air Transport Management. The focus is on research relating to commercial air transport (CAT) comprising scheduled and non-scheduled air services used by the general public and which transport passengers, cargo and mail from location to location. CAT provides a key service, impacting economic growth, employment and regional connectivity. There is, however, the increasingly contentious impact on the environment and climate change. The handbook comprises 33 chapters, and this Introduction by Lucy Budd and Stephen Ison provides a brief synopsis, structured into five key parts. Part I provides an overview of key topic areas, namely, governance and policy making, economics, finance, marketing, tourism, passenger accessibility and labour and human resource management and safety. Part II focuses on airlines and examines the various business models that are adopted; Part III focuses on airports, with particular attention paid to the airline-airport relationship, airport capacity planning, service quality, surface access, regional development and airport ownership. The negative externality effects of airline and airport operations are the focus of Part IV. Part V focuses on technological innovations posited as a solution to the environmental impacts of air transport. Part VI affords a conclusion providing a detailed consideration of the possible future trajectories for air transport management.
