Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 155-167 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Airline partnerships, including alliances and joint ventures (JVs), play a crucial role in the global airline industry. This chapter explores various commercial arrangements for airline collaboration, highlighting the different levels of integration among carriers. Codesharing is an arrangement where one airline markets and sells seats on flights operated by another airline. This practice serves as a foundational step for global alliances and joint ventures, which represent more complex forms of airline network collaboration. We consider the impact of airline partnerships on competition, passenger experience, and the commercial benefits they offer to the participating airlines. Additionally, we analyze the production and yield levels of joint ventures on North Atlantic routes, comparing carriers involved in JVs, those in global alliances but not involved in JVs, and nonaligned carriers. This case study illustrates that while alliances and joint ventures can enhance competition and offer more travel options, they may also reduce competition on certain routes, leading to higher yields due to increased average fares.
