Abstract:
Sustainable solutions through the use of clean energy, building retrofits, operational optimisation, and waste management are considered key to mitigating carbon emissions from airports. With rising passenger and cargo traffic post-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, energy consumption and associated emissions are likely to increase. Waste generation has also simultaneously undergone a sharp increase. However, to comply with regional and global targets to reduce emissions, many airports have started adopting sustainable alternatives. This chapter looks specifically at the sustainable energy and waste diversion measures airports have recently adopted. While many airports have surpassed the predetermined emission reduction goals ahead of time, there still needs to be significant changes to further reduce emissions. This chapter focuses on renewable energy and waste diversion options that have recently been employed at airports through a series of case studies.
