Airport self-service technologies

Chapter 32 in Research Handbook on Air Transport Management, 2026, pp 422-432 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Self-service technologies (SSTs) have been implemented in airports worldwide to enhance passenger experience and improve airports and airline operations. SSTs introduce new procedures and processes at various stages of the passenger journey, especially before departure, including check-in, bag drop, security check, border control and aircraft boarding. This chapter considers the current landscape of SSTs in airports, most notably self-service check-in and baggage drop-off systems, biometric identification and contactless technologies, automated border control, self-boarding, information kiosks and digital wayfinding. It provides a comprehensive overview of the current state and future direction of SSTs in airports while identifying issues and challenges surrounding SSTs.
