George Ofori
Chapter 2 in Research Companion to the Construction Industry in Developing Countries, 2026, pp 20-52 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Construction is a strategic industry, given its key role in economic growth, social development and prosperity. Each nation should have a strong and capable industry which undertakes projects with efficiency and effectiveness. It is essential to understand the industry and its needs to contribute to its continuous development. This is even more important in developing countries. This chapter is based on a review of the literature and considers the origin, evolution, development, components and current state of the field of knowledge within Construction in Developing Countries. It is found that there is a distinct field of Construction Industry in Developing Countries. Its evolution has not been smooth, but it has yielded fruit in several countries, forming the basis for policies, programmes and practice. More needs to be done to build up the industry in the developing countries. Finally, the chapter addresses the question: What does the future of Construction in Developing Countries look like?
