Business development in construction in developing countries

Chapter 7 in Research Companion to the Construction Industry in Developing Countries, 2026, pp 181-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The construction industry plays a pivotal role in the economic development of developing countries, putting in place the infrastructure and contributing significantly to employment. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in construction play a vital role, yet face challenges including limited access to finance, bureaucratic obstacles and inadequate institutional support. This chapter examines the dynamics of business development in construction in developing countries with South Africa as a case study. It employs a literature review and a survey of construction companies in addressing the research objectives. Findings reveal that while government initiatives have made progress in addressing the challenges, many SMEs are unaware of available schemes and resources. The study proposes a framework that highlights the need for collaboration among government, industry stakeholders and financial institutions. The study recommends a targeted programme including training, financing options and timely payment to further support SME development in the construction industry.
