The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and EU Taxonomy: a waterproof European plan for the energy transition? Zooming in on the water–energy nexus

Abstract: The goals of the EU legal framework for water management, regardless of whether they pertain to the protection of water quality or quantity or to flood-risk management, will only be reached if that framework is integrated properly with other sectors. This chapter will examine the specific interaction between the water and energy sectors, and it will evaluate the extent to which water-related concerns are taken into account in the development of offshore and onshore wind energy projects. To that end, the authors take the perspective of sustainability law, more specifically that of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the EU Taxonomy Regulation. The chapter introduces the water–energy nexus and related (legal) issues as well as the environmental objectives of the European Green Deal before explaining how the CSRD and the Taxonomy Regulation address the water–energy nexus. The conclusion is that the sustainability framework could be useful beyond the private sector because it provides opportunities to close the gap between different domains of policy and research.
