Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of the literature on the organisation of sport in Europe and more specifically outlines the main issues associated with the European model of sport and the challenges faced for future research and policy emphasis, development and implementation. To do so, three key dimensions are covered, namely amateur sport, professional sport and women's sport (football). Twelve main issues are identified across the three dimensions, with the limited access to financial resources in amateur sport, the model of finance in professional sport and the shortage of finance in women's sport (football) suggesting some similarities in the issues encountered. Through the overview of these dimensions a broader understanding of European sport can be generated. However, it remains that there are some challenges for future research and policy emphasis, development and implementation, with potential focuses suggested in the chapter.
