Abstract: This chapter focuses on the equestrian sport and its EU legal dimension. Equestrian sport is increasingly important and raises a number of questions, both regarding the EU sports dimension and animal welfare. Equestrian sports are perhaps the most equal of all sports. In this sport, men and women compete against each other; both horses and humans compete at various ages. The chapter introduces the topic of equestrian sport and its relationship to EU law, and how and why it is special, and addresses some of the main challenges for the future. In particular, the chapter focuses on animal welfare and sport in the context of horses and EU law.
