Ecologies of pharmaceutical consumption

Abstract: Pharmaceuticals must be translated into specific contexts of use and enter the bodies of users to yield any practical effects. This Part therefore attends to the consumption of pharmaceuticals as it unfolds at the junction between use, misuse, and non-use. Rather than individualistic consumer behavior, pharmaceutical consumption is analyzed here as collective and distributed practices that rely on a variety of social and material conditions, have wide-ranging implications for planetary health as well as public health, and might divert from professional norms. Together, the insights developed in this Part are subsumed analytically as an ecological understanding of pharmaceutical consumption.
