Chapter 13 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 47-49 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Following the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, the European Union, the United States and other countries adopted special economic measures, or sanctions, against certain Russian companies, individuals and economy sectors. Ukraine, which until 2022 did not break economic ties with Moscow despite its aggression, has developed its own sophisticated system of restrictive measures based on the 2014 Law ‘On Sanctions’. There is a working mechanism of consulting, coordination and publicity, whenever new entities fall under the law's action. The top court of the country has so far dismissed complaints of those challenging the legality and necessity of sanctions. Apparently, the sanctions have helped reduce Russia's capacity to conduct its aggression against Ukraine.
