Chapter 14 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 50-52 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry introduces the UK sanctions framework and practices, with a particular focus on its role as an independent sanctions issuer after Brexit. The Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 serves as the foundation of the UK independent sanctions framework. Thus far, 36 thematic and geographic sanctions regimes have been established to implement sanctions in trade, finance, immigration, and transport. The framework also includes provisions for exemptions and licences, as well as ministerial and judicial reviews to ensure due process. UK sanctions are often criticised for poor implementation, prompting the United Kingdom to pursue institutional reforms to enhance enforcement. As a significant player in the global sanctions landscape, the United Kingdom collaborates closely with international partners, including the EU and the United States. While still relatively new to this role, the United Kingdom continues to refine its sanctions regimes and assert its influence on the global stage.
