Chapter 16 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 58-61 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry describes how, why, and against whom the United States imposes economic sanctions. As the world's most active and powerful party employing sanctions, the United States is an important sanctions sender to understand. US sanctions have a global reach and affect targets in most of the world's countries. This entry provides insights into why US policymakers rely on sanctions so heavily and what goals they seek to accomplish with them. This entry also discusses US approaches to implementing sanctions and obtaining international cooperation for its sanctioning efforts. The entry concludes with a discussion of the factors affecting the success of US sanctions and the unintended consequences associated with their use.
