Sanctions databases

Chapter 65 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 225-227 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry provides an overview of widely used databases on economic sanctions, examining their scope, coverage, and limitations. As sanctions have grown in number and variety, scholars who produce these lists have responded by cataloguing new types of sanctions (such as targeted sanctions). Their efforts have helped in answering important questions about the causes and consequences of sanctions. However, the increasing number and complexity of sanctions make it impossible to produce and maintain databases manually. New technologies such as large language models and artificial intelligence more generally can help researchers meet this challenge.
