Abstract: Over the last decades, the European Union (EU) has emerged as one of the most important senders of international sanctions. This entry presents the historical origins of the EU sanctions policy, its institutional setup and sanctions-taking processes, an overview of existing EU sanctions regimes, as well as recent transformations in its sanctions practices and challenges for the future.
