The same old story? Economic geography of extractive industries in the 21st century capitalism

Felipe Irarrázaval

Chapter 11 in A Research Agenda for Economic Geography, 2025, pp 147-160 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores how the turbulent conditions of the global economy are reshaping the production networks of extractive industries, particularly those critical for the energy transition. As producers grapple with securing essential minerals for low-carbon technologies, the global demand for these “critical” minerals is driving changes in commodity frontiers, state roles, and global trade geographies. While resource extraction remains mainly tied to underdevelopment, the ongoing shifts in the global economy create opportunities for resource peripheries to reshape their integration into global production networks. The chapter critically examines whether these regions can build new productive capabilities and challenge their traditional roles in the international division of labor, or if they will continue to follow historical patterns of resource dependence. It highlights three interrelated dimensions that shape the economic geography of extractive industries: the reconfiguration of commodity frontiers under energy transition, the resurgence of the state, and the transformation toward net-zero emissions.
