Crypto tumblers

Assma Sabbhet and Henry M. Kim

Chapter 11 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 56-59 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Crypto tumblers, or mixers, are privacy-preserving mechanisms within decentralized systems using blockchain technology or distributed ledger technologies. Crypto tumblers are tools that disrupt the traceability of digital transactions, shielding individuals and organizations (users) from financial surveillance by enhancing anonymity. However, their potential misuse for illicit purposes, such as money laundering, has sparked significant regulatory and ethical debates. This chapter explores the inner workings and applications of crypto tumblers, as well as their economic and social implications.
