Chapter 61 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 298-302 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Web3 machine verifiable credentials (MVCs) allow users to possess, share, and verify digital credentials in a decentralized, secure, and privacy-preserving manner. Machine verifiable credentials enable automated verification processes that rely on cryptography and blockchain technologies, offering a solution to several problems inherent in Web2 centralized credentialing systems. This chapter explains how Web3 MVCs operate within the trust diamond ecosystem and discusses the key principles, technical components, and challenges.
