Sport and culture: an introduction

Abstract: The principal objective of the current Handbook is to explore the interactive relationships between sport and culture. More specifically, this Handbook offers the first attempt to comprehensively examine the key dimensions of culture in relationship to the fundamental processes of sport with a global, intercultural perspective. The chapter attempts to integrate the meanings and structures of sport with the interpretation of culture as an organising force which enables meaningful interactions between individuals, groups and communities. Reviewed are six dominating models of national culture thathave largely informed studies in the field of sport. The integration of different theoretical models of culture with the meanings and structures of sport then results in an analytical framework comprising the seven key dimensions of the culture–sport nexus, which provides the structure for the Handbook.
