Cultural production and consumption in sport
Adam Gemar
Chapter 20 in Handbook on Sport and Culture, 2025, pp 302-315 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the cultural production and consumption of sport through the lens of multiple model frameworks. Emphasising the Production of Culture (POC) perspective and focusing on symbolic elements of sport, it examines how external factors such as technology, law, industry structure, organisational forms, occupational careers, market dynamics, and socioeconomic and demographic positions shape sports production and consumption. In doing so, it uses multiple global examples of technological advancements (e.g. VAR and sports analytics), regulatory impacts, and the role of industry structures in determining the diversity of sports offerings. The chapter highlights the social dimensions of sports consumption, discussing models like cultural omnivorousness, voracious consumption, and gendered patterns in sports engagement. By incorporating global examples, empirical evidence, and sociological theories, this chapter offers a thorough introduction to sport's contemporary production and consumption as a cultural form, illustrating the relationship between sociocultural forces, individual preferences, and collective identities in the domain of sport.
