The cultural basis of elite sport systems: an Institutional Logics Perspective

Chapter 25 in Handbook on Sport and Culture, 2025, pp 382-397 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the cultural underpinnings of elite sport systems using the Institutional Logics Perspective. It examines how globalisation and commercialisation drive convergence in sport practices while unique cultural, social, and historical contexts foster divergence. By analysing various institutional orders—state, market, professions, corporation, and community—the chapter reveals the complex interactions shaping elite sport policies and practices. A matrix of institutional logics and elite sport policy success pillars illustrates the dynamic relationships between these factors. The chapter highlights the importance of culturally sensitive sport policies and suggests future research directions to enhance understanding of the cultural dimensions influencing elite sport systems.
