Chapter 14 in Cases in Organization Development and Change, 2026, pp 130-143 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Major Focus of the Case: This case shows how organization development (OD) techniques can be leveraged to build effective, collaborative teams that deliver superior organizational performance. The case offers an in-depth exploration of OD engagements led by Dr. Fahad Alshawan, a senior OD expert with Bechtel in the Middle East region. The engagements took place in critical projects in Saudi Arabia where the alignment of teams was crucial for project success. Recognizing the importance of effective collaboration between consultants and clients, Bechtel has made OD a key component of its strategy to ensure cohesive relationships and the development of high-performing teams. Dr. Alshawan employed a variety of OD tools and methodologies tailored to the unique needs of the project. Each intervention was strategically designed to foster team unity, enhance communication, and improve collaboration, ultimately boosting project performance and creating a more seamless partnership between Bechtel's internal teams and their external clients. The interventions exemplify how OD techniques can be leveraged to build effective, collaborative teams that deliver superior organizational performance.
