Improving project team communication through relational leading practices

Ronald W. Reidy and Jacqueline M. Stavros

Chapter 17 in Cases in Organization Development and Change, 2026, pp 162-169 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Major Focus of the Case: Relational leading theory and associated practices are recognized as a leadership style where positive communication exchange takes place. One major part of organizational development (OD) is use of self-leadership development, where relational leading is all about relationships we have with others and leadership is very relational and a behavioral science as we intervene with others at a team level. Leadership is about leading, which is motivating, inspiring, influencing, and guiding others around a vision or goal. Leading is relational. Relational leading is viewed as an activity where people are connected in relationships and are able to move forward to make meaning and create positive change. This is a different perspective than leadership theories of the past where the term “leadership” frequently takes a more isolated view and refers to attributes of a single person designated as the leader. This case illustrates how relational leading practices can complement traditional project management principles to maximize project results, encourage communication, and develop employee skillsets.
