Guidelines for understanding, building, and changing organization cultures

D.D. Warrick

Chapter 23 in Cases in Organization Development and Change, 2026, pp 225-236 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Major Focus of the Case: The emerging research on culture has made culture an important part of building organizations for success and of attracting, motivating, and retaining talented people. Indeed, some researchers have concluded that building strong cultures is the most important skill among the many skills needed to be an effective leader. The problem is that few leaders know much about culture and how it impacts performance and fewer still understand how to build and change organization culture. This case informs the reader about the importance of culture and how to understand, build, and change culture. Then, rather than presenting a case involving culture, the reader is given an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the Discussion items.
