Chapter 5 in China's Climate Policy, 2025, pp 84-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Abstract China's strategic focus on green economic growth through clean energy technologies is evident in its policies and incentives. The government has implemented a mix of quantity-based and price-based interventions to promote renewable energy sources. These initiatives aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and drive economic development. The Renewable Energy Law of 2006 laid the foundation for key policies such as Renewable Portfolio Standards, Feed-in Tariffs, and direct subsidies, which have been instrumental in accelerating renewable energy development in China. The government's efforts align with its goal of transitioning from a manufacturing powerhouse to an innovation-driven economic leader. Industry alliances and collaborations between central authorities, state-owned enterprises, and provincial governments have facilitated the growth of the renewable energy market. The renewable energy sector in China presents opportunities for governance transition and sustainable development in the face of global challenges.
