Abstract:
Sport coaching is best framed as a pedagogical endeavour centrally concerned with educating the athlete in and through movement. Skilled coaching involves intentional effort comprising a variety of approaches because no single coaching style can accomplish all intended objectives for players. The question for coaches is, which coaching style(s) will be most effective with which activity? The Spectrum of Coaching Styles is of great value in answering this question. Originally a pedagogical model from physical education, The Spectrum is a model, a philosophy, and a framework that assists coaches in creating alignment between their desired outcomes and practice. In this chapter, we outline how The Spectrum defines coaching as a chain of decision-making, how this definition allows coaches to see numerous coaching styles, and we provide practical examples showing how coaching styles can be used in Game Based Approaches.
