Towards effectiveness of learner-centered pedagogical practices in coach education: the urgency of designing learner-centered curriculums

Michel Milistetd and Lincoln Cruz Martins

Chapter 13 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 139-150 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter we explore the pedagogical implications of the contemporary shift towards learner-centeredness in sports coaching and coach education. We advocate for the design of learner-centered curricula (LCC) to enhance educational effectiveness. Despite coaches’ positive perception of learner-centered pedagogical practices, concerns persist regarding the depth of learning for coaches and potential behavioral changes in how coaches go about their work. In seeking to address these concerns, the LCC perspective emphasizes active learner involvement in curriculum building and self-directed learning. The seven dimensions of LCC are outlined – recursion, rigor, richness, relations, community-building, power-sharing, and assessment – and we discuss strategies to overcome barriers of implementation such as resistance to change, power dynamics, misalignment of policies and practices, and the need for cultural shifts. We conclude the chapter by highlighting the necessity of a collaborative approach to curriculum development and a supportive environment that fosters continuous improvement to address real coaching needs.
