Abstract:
Language and power are two pervasive concepts in sport coaching research. However, these terms take on varied meanings based on the scholar-coach's philosophical orientation. While modernist assumptions of language and power are readily enacted and understood by scholar-coaches, poststructural philosophical assumptions are often obscure. This is problematic because scholar-coaches trying to turn towards poststructural ways of living may find their practices change while their philosophical assumptions remain grounded in incommensurable modernist assumptions. Indeed, language and power, among other big philosophical concepts, must be completely rethought in poststructuralism. This process of rethinking needs to occur while undoing modernist conceptions of these terms. This chapter, therefore, contributes to the undoing of modernist roots by articulating how language and power are viewed from a poststructural perspective. We undertake this effort not to disparage modernist ways of thinking but to differentiate and open a passageway for poststructural coaching research and practice.
