Chapter 7 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 68-79 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The love of sports and coaching also comes with competitive demands and stressors that may result in burnout. Recognizing this, burnout was first discussed in sports science about 40 years ago. Since then, research on coach burnout has received less attention than research that focused on athlete burnout. Given that, the first aim of this chapter is to provide an understanding of the nature of coach burnout and its associated measurement approaches. Second, we discuss how research has been applied to coaching and the commitment and effort-reward imbalance perspectives. Third, we address how most studies have focused on antecedents with limited attention to how burnout impacts well-being and ill-being. The final section provides future research directions, including scholarship on measurement issues and coach well-being, with a specific call to recognize diversity in research methods and the need for intervention research.
