Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Austrian Economics in Management and Entrepreneurship, 2025, pp 248-285 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, we review the use of Austrian economics’ “kaleidic” form in entrepreneurship research. The goal of this literature review is to consolidate and organize our findings for management and entrepreneurship scholars and to offer some additional thoughts, implications, and directions. To achieve this goal, we gather the scattered, often fragmented, and largely buried kaleidic “bones” of entrepreneurship and sort them into five distinct “piles” or themes: imagination, complexity, dynamism, uncertainty, and indeterminacy. For each theme, we review the literature and engage in a broader meditation that draws implications for future entrepreneurship research and suggests possible research directions. Our chapter takes an important step in advancing the understanding of Austrian economics in entrepreneurship generally and the radical Austrian approach to entrepreneurship specifically. We encourage entrepreneurship scholars to pursue this radically subjective approach and to fearlessly explore the kaleidic world of imagination, complexity, dynamism, uncertainty, and indeterminacy that it opens up.
