Connecting Austrian economics and women's entrepreneurship: gender capital in action
Christine Woods
Chapter 4 in Research Handbook on Austrian Economics in Management and Entrepreneurship, 2025, pp 65-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
While Austrian economics has made significant contributions to the field of entrepreneurship, its relative silence on gender contrasts markedly with the growing attention paid to gender issues in organizational studies and entrepreneurship research. This chapter suggests that understanding the role of gender, specifically gender capital, in the entrepreneurial process will be both a fruitful and necessary addition to the Austrian canon. Gender capital is a multifaceted concept encompassing the aggregation of knowledge, resources, and identity, which manifests in women's distinct opportunities, advantages, and challenges in the entrepreneurial journey. By integrating insights from social economy research, organization studies and entrepreneurship research, the chapter sheds light on how gender capital influences the entrepreneurial journey. Drawing on the illustrative narratives of two women entrepreneurs, the chapter demonstrates how gender capital influences the subjective process of entrepreneurial intention, opportunity recognition, resource mobilization and opportunity realization.
