Chapter 4 in A World of Meta-Organizations, 2026, pp 44-69 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Meta-organizations undertake a variety of work, from organizing meetings to lobbying governments to training employees of member organizations, and how meta-organizations organize that work varies enormously. Nevertheless, knowledge of the organization of people and work in meta-organizations and of the implications for the meta-organization is limited. This chapter seeks to clarify the ways in which meta-organizations organize to accomplish their work, using the concept of workforce to make sense of the differences in organizing the work in meta-organizations. An analysis of 68 meta-organizations enabled us to identify four forms of workforce: rotating, chosen, mixed, and functionally autonomous. This research discusses what their differences mean for practice and theory.
