Chapter 2 in Field Guide to Entrepreneurial Finance, 2026, pp 10-31 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter we analyze and discuss what we know and do not know about financial bootstrapping. The interest in financial bootstrapping, i.e. methods to meet resource needs without long-term external finance, emerged in the 1980s and 1990s as a reaction to the assumption that most businesses need large amounts of (external) financial capital. Since the first research articles on financial bootstrapping, scientific interest has grown significantly, and in the chapter we analyze our knowledge about the use of financial bootstrapping and outcomes this creates. Furthermore, we present suggestions for future research in terms of conceptual and methodological considerations, as well as implications for using financial bootstrapping in a changing entrepreneurial landscape.
