Reward-based and lending-based crowdfunding

Ahmed Sewaid

Chapter 5 in Field Guide to Entrepreneurial Finance, 2026, pp 89-107 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Crowdfunding has rapidly emerged as a pivotal source of entrepreneurial finance, fundamentally reshaping how ventures access capital and engage with a diverse investor base. This chapter examines two prominent crowdfunding models, highlighting their distinct mechanisms, benefits, and challenges for entrepreneurs. It synthesizes current research on signaling, communication strategies, and entrepreneur and venture characteristics influencing crowdfunding outcomes. Additionally, critical gaps in existing research are identified, particularly emphasizing the need to explore pre- and post-campaign dynamics, platform heterogeneity, entrepreneur and backer diversity, crowdfunding's role within entrepreneurial ecosystems, geographic variations, and cross-border funding opportunities. By addressing these areas, future research can significantly advance understanding of crowdfunding's impact on entrepreneurial strategy and ecosystem dynamics.
