Family offices
Joern Block
Chapter 8 in Field Guide to Entrepreneurial Finance, 2026, pp 152-164 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Family offices are specialized entities that manage the wealth of affluent families, increasingly investing in startups and scaleups through direct investments. These investments often pursue both financial and non-financial family goals. Unlike venture capital or private equity firms, family offices are often characterized as long-term, patient investors due to their strong ties to business families. This chapter aims to explore family offices as entrepreneurial finance investors, with a particular emphasis on their investment processes and outcomes. It summarizes existing literature and develops a taxonomy to derive a research agenda to explore family offices as entrepreneurial finance investors.
