Abstract:
In response to the escalating challenges posed by climate change, this research investigates the sustainability practices of Amazon within its supply chain management and evaluates its effectiveness against major competitors such as Walmart, Alibaba, JD.com, UPS, and FedEx. The methodology involves a comparative analysis of sustainability metrics using CO2 emissions and energy consumption data covering a 3–5-year time frame. SPSS is used for statistical analysis, with methods including t-tests to evaluate the significance of differences observed between Amazon and its competitors. Preliminary results indicate that Amazon's sustainability efforts, while ambitious—aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—exhibit certain inefficiencies when compared to the more aggressive initiatives of its rivals. Notably, companies like Walmart and UPS have made strides in implementing electric fleets and achieving significant emissions reductions, positioning them as leaders in sustainable practices. Citing best practices from their competitors should help Amazon to enhance its strategy in light of our findings that suggest Amazon needs a comprehensive assessment of sustainability mechanisms related to interoperability aspects. The research contributes to ongoing discourse on corporate sustainability and responsibility within the realm of supply chain management.
