Sustainable digital health: integrating AI and circular economy principles

Kavita Rawat Garg, Krishan Kumar Pandey and Gaurav Kabra

Chapter 18 in Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and the Circular Economy, 2026, pp 279-297 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: There is limited research on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with circular economy (CE) principles for healthcare technologies, particularly medical devices and digital health platforms. Existing studies discussed physical products, such as single-use medical supplies; however, data on the application of CE principles to digital health devices or platforms are inadequate. This chapter focuses on the predictive analytics-based AI models optimized for energy efficiency and addresses the need to safeguard data privacy and security within the CE model. Innovative digital health products, such as mobile health applications and wearable devices, provided a transformative shift in healthcare practices, thus changing the landscape of the digital health space. AI-based predictive data analytics, AI-driven decision-making, and circular production models support sustainable practices in digital health. This approach improves operational efficiency, patient outcomes, early detection and prevention of diseases, and real-time personalized treatment plans through digital health interventions. This chapter also discusses strategies and best practices for integrating AI with CE principles, addresses challenges in designing sustainable health products, offers a realistic perspective on hurdles in the field, and offers practical, actionable insights for healthcare providers and policymakers to create more efficient and sustainable healthcare systems.
