The role of AI in driving circular economy governance in mergers and acquisitions of Indian chemical industries

Biswadeep Dutta

Chapter 5 in Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and the Circular Economy, 2026, pp 60-76 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This study aims to dive into the possible effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity in India's chemical sector, with a focus on how AI can revolutionise the management of circular economies. Some anticipate that AI will revolutionise post-merger integration, decision-making, and the push for circular business models. The increasing concern for the impact on the environment prompted this measure. Using a quantitative methodology, this study analyses survey data gathered from experts in the field. The results show that AI significantly improves sustainability by cutting down on waste, increasing supply chain efficiency, and improving resource utilisation. Several limitations about the impact of AI on public trust in government are also highlighted in the report. While AI seems to be able to boost productivity for some companies, it may not do the trick for others when it comes to building trust. This study provides valuable information for practitioners and policymakers interested in using AI for environmentally responsible practices in the chemical business. More generally, it points to potential directions for research in the business world.
