Abstract: The chapter discusses the opportunities and constraints contemporary universities face in fostering developmental innovations, while considering key global trends and local differences. Despite immense differences in opportunities and constraints across and within universities in the Global North and the Global South, collaboration and knowledge sharing are essential to addressing major contemporary challenges, such as climate change, declining biodiversity, health issues, and rising inequality. From this perspective, the chapter presents ideas for future research related to teaching, research, and external collaboration. The advent of generative AI across all sectors of the economy, including universities, requires a rethinking of curricula, exam formats, learning models, research practices, and the effects on academic jobs, as well as collaboration with external partners. In today's geopolitical situation, the traditional role of universities as defenders of critical thinking and the exchange of new ideas is needed more than ever.
