Chapter 10 in Digital Human Finance, 2026, pp 158-171 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores how DFS are reshaping traditional savings and investment practices, highlighting the relationship between technological innovation, cultural norms and financial well-being. Drawing on case studies from diverse global settings, it examines how both short-term and long-term savings strategies evolve when incorporated into digital platforms. We also discuss other dimensions of savings including gendered roles, intergenerational responsibilities and social obligations. By focusing on the flexibility and accessibility of digital solutions, the chapter shows how automated transfers, mobile platforms and user-friendly interfaces can empower low- and middle-income individuals to build financial resilience and plan for the future. At the same time, the chapter cautions against a one-size-fits-all approach: without careful design and financial literacy support, marginalized groups risk exclusion and cultural nuances may be overlooked. We call for an inclusive and context-sensitive adoption of digital savings and investment tools, maintaining that these platforms carry significant potential to democratize wealth creation and promote economic security, provided they address the structural, educational and cultural needs of their users.
