Abstract:
Integration of decent work and economic growth in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 can be both contradictory and complementary. The institutional logics of operation managers and occupational safety and health (OSH) managers, respectively, tend to divide. Operations managers think in terms of optimization of production (cost and quality) and tend to think of OSH requirements as time-consuming. The OSH managers think of risk assessment and control and tend to accuse operations managers of neglecting OSH. Yet, integration of operations and OSH at the shopfloor has potential benefits, which support root cause solutions of quality, OM, and OSH problems, stimulate continuous improvements, and engage workers. However, regulation of OSH is necessary to secure institutional pressure to prioritize safety and health risks in the workplace.
