Schools in transforming neighborhoods: the combined impact of urban change and school choice. The case of Milan

Marta Cordini and Andrea Parma

Chapter 4 in Gentrification and Schooling in Global Cities, 2026, pp 70-94 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the effects on the composition of local schools of urban and social transformations that characterize neighborhoods, by analyzing the case of Milan. The analysis focuses on neighborhoods characterized by gentrification processes that have seen an increase in the share of residents with university degrees and employed as managers and professionals. The selected neighborhoods are at different stages of the process of change that has been set in motion by different drivers. Specifically, the chapter analyzes trends in local school enrollment highlighting whether and to what extent the change in the socio-economic structure of the resident population affects the attractiveness of the local schools. The results show different outcomes highlighting how specific offers and territorial locations can affect the choice patterns of parents with similar profiles.
