Abstract: The introduction to the book begins by welcoming the reader. We invite you to think about how you approach this book, perhaps while listening to music, or against the soundscape of the noises of everyday life. In turbulent times, we have written the book so that you can dip in and out, and move between chapters as you wish. Chapters vary in shapes and sizes, in tone and in style, reflecting our wish to disrupt normative modes of knowledge production in the academy and to welcome in readers and authors who sit inside, outside and in between academic and activist spaces. We introduce the theoretical framework, critical disability studies, which is threaded through this book before introducing each of the chapters in turn to help you orientate your reading. We hope you enjoy reading this book as much as we have enjoyed editing it.
