 The matterphorics of dis/political loveMartina Smith Chapter 18 in Disability in a Turbulent Era, 2026, pp 213-221 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: In this chapter I write about love in the lives of people with learning disabilities and their families. The word love comes from a very old word used thousands of years ago that means to care and love. I draw attention to the history of the word love as a reminder that it can mean something more than just a romantic love or love between individuals. I suggest an understanding of love that is political and has a place in the health, social care and education policies and practices that shape the lives of people with learning disabilities and their families. This is important in these current times when health, social care and education are all under-funded and not meeting the needs of everyone who they should be serving, particularly people with learning disabilities and their families. I imagine a political love that brings people together, where everyone matters and is attended to with care in all social, health and education policies and practices. I call this ‘dis’political love as a way of making sure that people with learning ‘dis’abilities are always part of this togetherness and always central to any health, social care and education policies and practices.
