People with learning disabilities getting support to rent their own homes

Abstract: This chapter is about people with learning disabilities who rent their own homes in England. We are a group of researchers with and without learning disabilities. Our research found that people liked renting their own homes. To help manage renting a home, people often need help with things like bills and repairs. This support can make a big difference. We found that not everybody got this support and that more and more, people were being asked to pay for the support from their own pockets. We think this puts people at risk of things like getting into debt or even losing their rented home. Our research says that people with learning disabilities can be ‘good tenants’ and that renting a home can be a good option. When we thought about it afterwards it seemed odd to have to do a big research project to find out something so obvious. We wonder if too much research about people with learning disabilities is like this – asks questions it wouldn’t even bother asking about non-disabled people. Is this part of a bigger problem that sometimes gets ignored by research and do we need to speak out about this more?
