A feminist political economy approach to affordable housing and social reproduction in the polycrisis

Chapter 7 in Critical Political Economy of the European Polycrisis, 2025, pp 93-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Affordable housing has become a key aspect of polycrisis. In most regions of the world, processes of financialization have led to rising rents and house prices. Next to high energy costs in central Europe due to the full-scale war in Ukraine, poorer parts of the population are often left behind. The chapter takes a feminist international political economy approach to housing and social reproduction to analyse which parts of the population in Austria and Vienna are affected the most by these developments. Although formerly ‘Red Vienna’ has been considered a safe haven for affordable housing, the shifting international developments and financialization have left their mark, especially on lone parents, migrants, and low-income households who are affected the most. These developments are then compared to exemplary cases in the Global South to show why we need a pluralized understanding of social reproduction approaches to understand the effects of the polycrisis globally.
