Public perceptions of AI
Pascal D. Koenig ()
Chapter 6 in Understanding the Politics of Artificial Intelligence, 2025, pp 67-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
People's perceptions of AI are important not only for how the technology is taken up in society, but also for what policies find acceptance and how much policymakers care about AI as a political topic. This chapter examines public perceptions of AI, describing how much people know about AI, what hopes and concerns they associate with it, and how much they want to see it regulated. The chapter also sheds light on the extent to which AI is politicised and a contentious topic in public opinion. It discusses evidence about how much perceptions of AI are tied to political ideology and whether there exist divides in people's views that are rooted in different segments of society. As two further kinds of public perceptions that can gain particular political relevance, the chapter looks at perceived automation risks due to AI adoption and people's perceptions of AI use in government.
