Introduction to The Elgar Companion to Democracy and Development in Africa

Samuel Ojo Oloruntoba and Yiagadeesen Samy

Chapter 1 in The Elgar Companion to Democracy and Development in Africa, 2026, pp 1-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This introductory chapter by the editors provides an overview of recent political and economic developments across sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, it examines why democracy in the region is currently under threat despite the third wave of democratic transitions that began in the early 1990s; interrogates the increasingly contested “Africa rising” narrative; and highlights the limited attention given to traditional systems of governance. The chapter then considers key challenges to African development agendas and makes the case for democracy – particularly democratic governance – as a central component of sustainable development.
