Chapter 8 in The Elgar Companion to Democracy and Development in Africa, 2026, pp 142-158 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Nigerian political parties lack any distinguishing ideologies, and this has accounted for the parties not having marked differences among themselves. Lack of ideology has greatly constrained Nigerian political parties in their democratic practices, reduced members’ allegiance to their parties, and has contributed to the governance crisis currently afflicting the country. This chapter argues for a constitutional provision requiring political parties in Nigeria to adopt specific ideologies as a condition for official recognition, and which will serve the parties as a basis for their organization, activities, and programs as political parties within the political process, as well as when they are in government at any level.
